2015 BAKER TO VEGAS CHALLENGE CUP RELAY

COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

During this race we will have several different radios in the catcher and follow vans.

**** There is NO cell coverage once you’re on the race course.

**** The Black and White Mercedes-Benz will only have a portable radio.  Read below for portable radio instructions.

1.                Satellite radio:  Primary Comms!!!

a.   Primary radio to communication with all vans and HQ (Highland Hotel/Jim Valle)

b.  We will be testing these radios from a company called COBHAM/SATCOM via Nick Upchurch

                                        i.    We are testing these satellite radios for possible use in Police vehicles or emergency response vehicles.

ii.    They are for use during out of radio-range with dispatch or other communications failures where only satellites will work.

iii.    Also when in remote locations where NO cell or radio frequencies are available.

c.   Please use the satellite radio as primary communication!!

2.        FRS radio

a.   FOR FOLLOW VAN DRIVERS ONLY.

b.  THE FRS RADIO MUST BE ON CHANNEL 3-18

c.   SPARE BATTERIES MUST BE WITHIN ARM REACH OF RADIO

d.  RACE OFFICIAL WILL COMMUNICATE WITH YOU VIA THIS RADIO.

e.   YOU MUST BE AWARE OF THE FRS RADIO, AS LACK OF COMMUNICATION WITH A RACE OFFICIAL CAN RESULT IN POINT DEDUCTIONS OR DISQUALIFICATION

f.    OTHER FOLLOW VANS/TEAMS MAY COMMUNICATE WITH YOU VIA THIS FRS RADIO

g.   YOU CAN COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER FOLLOW VANS AS WELL.

h.  ASK OTHER FOLLOW VANS TO MOVE OR ASK FOR ASSISTANCE DURING PASSING, ETC.

3.               Ham Radio

a.   Secondary radio, to communicate with HQ and most vans

b.  Technically an authorized (License) person should handle the Ham, but in an emergency you can use the radio to contact HQ (Highland Hotel)

4.      BH Team B2V Portable radios

a.   DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT ONLY , van to van, person to person, and will work up to 5 miles and possibly up to 10 miles away, depending on terrain and or obstacles(Mountains, no line of sight)

b.   For catchers these will be very valuable as you can disconnect them from the roof mounted antenna and take with you when catching.

c.   You can communicate with the follow van to get an idea of how far they are from your catching location.

d.  Please do not lose the antenna for this radio when connecting and disconnecting from the roof mounted antenna wire in the vehicle.

e.   If you lose the antenna, the radio will no longer work outside of the van. It will only work while connected to the roof mounted antenna.

f.    Talk as much as you want on these radios

g.   This radio only has one channel
